Shizuko's Mirror (Prototype) 2007

Shizuko's Mirror is a dual screen video installation experiment based on a scene from the film Ring 2 where the ghosts of a mother and daughter appear in an old inn.  The mother is standing before the mirror combing her luxurious long hair, when the daughter enters the scene and stands behind and to one side of her mother.  The daughter uses her powers of telekinesis to make the mirror jump across the wall to reflect herself instead of her mother.

The aim with this project was to break the boundary between the illusion on the screen and the space occupied by the audience, - to make the events in the film come closer to reality.  I used two physical mirrors to represent the one in the film and hung them on what would be the gallery wall in the finished installation.  The images of the woman and the child then come and go in the mirrors, which reflect the audience again when the short sequence ends.

Actress Lindsay Womersley played the part of 'the woman with the long hair'.

The project was hosted by Leeds Metropolitan Gallery for Testbed 2007
